Short-Term Research in Mexico for Graduate Students
In July, Alianza MX selected the first group of UC graduate students for funding awards to support short-term research projects in Mexico. This new initiative will provide 21 students from eight different UC campuses with supplemental funding for one to three months of research in Mexico during the 2023–24 academic year, including living expenses and round-trip travel. The students selected for funding awards will conduct research on a broad range of topics, including Anthropology; Art History; Economics; Education; Ecology, Evolution & Marine Biology; History; Linguistics; Plant Science; Political Science; Public Health; Religious Studies; and Sociology.

New Strategic Research and Latino Studies Projects
Alianza MX is pleased to announce support for a new Strategic Research Project, which develops action research engagement with key non-academic stakeholders through multi-campus collaboration. The “CA-MX Border ZEV Infrastructure Analysis” project will be led by the UCR Center for Environmental Research & Technology and will study the outlook for and implications of the zero-emissions vehicle transition on heavy-duty trucking in the California-Mexico border region.
Alianza MX is also pleased to announce support for a new Latino Studies Project, which highlights connections between Mexico and California’s Latino, Hispanic, and/or Chicano populations. The “MEX-Clásicos: Diversifying the Classics” project will be led by the UCLA Spanish & Portuguese Department and will support research and performance of Hispanic classical theater in both Los Angeles and Mexico City.

Mexican Water Researchers Visit UC Merced
During the month of July, student and faculty researchers from several Mexican partner institutions visited UC Merced as part of an ongoing strategic research project on “Water Resources Management: Improving Climate-Extreme Resilience in Mexico and the United States,” led by Dr. Josué Medellín. Visitors included Dr. Carlos Patiño Gómez from Universidad de las Américas, Puebla (UDLAP) and Dr. Aldo Ramírez Orozco from Tecnológico de Monterrey, as well as graduate students from UDLAP and Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH). The research visits focused on the development of case studies that will be included in a forthcoming white paper and reviewed at a workshop at Casa de California in Mexico City scheduled to take place later this year.

Presentation of the Final Report on the 2022 Forum on Education and Migration
|
|
On May 16, Alianza MX hosted the Presentation of the Final Report for the 2022 Forum on US-MX Education and Migration at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, DC, in collaboration with the Embassy of Mexico in the United States. The conversation focused on promoting a bilateral agenda geared towards creating policies in the areas of education, economic growth, and integration. Distinguished participants included Mexican Ambassador to the US Esteban Moctezuma and Roberto J. Rodríguez, US Assistant Secretary of Education for Planning, Evaluation, and Policy Development.

UCR-UNAM Athletics Collaboration
In June, Alianza MX welcomed the UCR’s Men’s Soccer Team to Mexico City for the inaugural student-athlete exchange between UC Riverside and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). UCR student-athletes played three matches against Club Universitario, Pumas UNAM, and Universidad Panamericana. In honor of the collaboration, Alianza MX also hosted a reception at Casa de la Universidad de California which included distinguished participants Alejandro Barrón, Sports Diplomacy Specialist from the US Embassy in Mexico City, and Wesley Mallet, UCR Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. The UCR-UNAM athletic collboration is expected to continue in 2024 with a visit by the UNAM’s Women Soccer to the UCR campus.

HACU on the Road visits Casa de la Universidad de California
The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities hosted an event on June 28 at Casa de California as part of its HACU on the Road visits. The event brought together over 20 higher education leaders and high-level stakeholders to promote an international dialogue about the state of Hispanic higher education. The event was hosted by HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores, who highlighted key programs and initiatives of the association. Other distinguished participants included Ethan Rosenzweig, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Academic Programs in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and Silvio Gonzalez, Minister Counselor for Public Diplomacy at the US Embassy in Mexico.

Webinar Series
The Alianza MX Climate Ambassadors Live Webinar Series brings experts together to discuss the most pressing environmental issues and climate concerns among youth in Mexico and the United States. Our third webinar in the series took place on June 5 and focused on “The Future of Renewable Energy in Mexico and California.” Speakers included Mauricio Herrera, Deputy Director of the Mexican Wind Energy Association (AMDEE); Nelson Delgado, Director of the Mexican Association of Solar Energy (ASOLMEX); and Patricia Tatto, President of Women in Renewable Energy Mexico (MERM).

Climate Ambassadors continue to participate actively in a range of initiatives for binational collaboration including the UC-developed "Bending The Curve” massive open online course (MOOC) on the latest developments in climate change mitigation and adaptation, coordinating a Python Course to improve their technical skills, and sharing their knowledge and insights through blog posts and podcast episodes on the climate agenda.
