UC Researchers Present Project on Border Infrastructure for Zero-Emission Vehicles

On April 18, Alfredo Martinez-Morales and Miroslav Penchev, researchers from the College of Engineering - Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT) at the University of California, Riverside, visited Mexico City to present an update on their Alianza MX-funded project: "Analysis of Infrastructure for Zero Emission Vehicles on the California-Mexico Border in the Medium-Duty Vehicle Sector." During their visit, the CE-CERT delegation met with the Institute of Engineering and the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Change at UNAM, the School of Engineering at Tecnológico de Monterrey, and a project Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) that includes representatives from the Mexican government and the private sector to discuss specific aspects of the project as well as broader research goals. The CE-CERT delegation also participated in the XV International Transport Congress organized by the Mexican Association of Transport and Mobility (AMTM), held from April 18-20 at the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) in Mexico City.

Jail Cruz, Alianza MX Strategic Initiatives Engagement Coordinator, also moderated a panel discussion at the AMTM Congress on "Educational Needs and Curricula for Transport and Mobility” that included contributions from Miriam Téllez Ballesteros of the Autonomous University of Mexico City (UACM) and Andrea Rendon Peña and Claudia Zamora Jiménez of IPN.

Alianza MX Presents Research at Sustainable Mobility Forum

On April 23, Alianza MX participated in the Second Sustainable Mobility Forum organized by the National Association of Private Transport (ANTP) in Querétaro. Jail Ixel Cruz García, Strategic Research Initiatives Coordinator, served as a panelist at a session on "International Experiences of the Freight Transport Sector for Sustainable Mobility," where she emphasized the importance of incorporating academia into the design and implementation of public policies, especially in the transition to zero-emission mobility in North America. She highlighted Alianza MX's support for various research projects, such as an ongoing research project analyzing zero-emission vehicle infrastructure at the California-Mexico border. 

Casa de California Hosts Research Workshop on Mexican Revolution

As leader of a Latino Studies Project sponsored by Alianza MX, Dr. Verónica Castillo of UC Santa Barbara led a second workshop on "Breaking Barriers: Binational Collaborations, Colonialism, Gender, and Transnationalism in Mexico and the United States," on May 31 at Casa de la Universidad de California in Mexico City. Aiming to establish a permanent binational colloquium, the workshop brought together historians, curators, and professors from UC Berkeley, UC Los Angeles, UC Santa Barbara, Texas A&M, El Colegio de México, Archivo Casasola, Instituto Mora, and the National Museum of the Revolution to discuss building partnerships, expanding access to archives in Mexico and the U.S., and engaging communities in public history.

Alianza MX Supports UC Research Collaboration with Jalisco to Support Semiconductor Industry Development


As part of the ongoing US-Mexico Semiconductor Cooperation Forum organized by the Mexican IT Chamber (CANIETI) and the US Embassy in Mexico, Alianza MX led a UC delegation to the second forum meeting on June 10-11 in Tijuana that included representatives from California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2). During this event, Alianza MX announced a new collaborative initiative between Calit2 and key partners in Jalisco—including the State Council of Science & Technology (COECYTJAL) and academic institutions such as CINVESTAV, ITESO, and Tec de Monterrey—that will sponsor visits to UC campuses by Mexican technical experts. Dr. Ramesh Rao, Director of the Qualcomm Institute at UCSD, also participated in a panel discussion on Talent and R&D Coordination and highlighted the ways that Calit2 can support binational collaboration that enhances Mexico’s competitiveness through technical assistance, training programs, and infrastructure support.

UC Graduate Students Selected for Funding to Complete Short-Term Research Projects in Mexico

In May, Alianza MX selected the second group of UC graduate students for funding awards to support short-term research projects in Mexico. This initiative will provide 25 students from eight different UC campuses with supplemental funding for one to three months of research in Mexico during the 2024–25 academic year, including living expenses and round-trip travel. The students selected for funding awards will conduct research on a broad range of topics, including Anthropology; Art History; Economics; Education; Ecology, Evolution & Marine Biology; History; Linguistics; Plant Science; Political Science; Public Health; Religious Studies; and Sociology. Call for Latino Studies Project Proposals

Deadline to apply: July 19, 2024

Alianza MX is now accepting proposals for Latino Studies Projects, scheduled on a two-year cycle starting from January 2025 to January 2027. These projects aim to explore the connections of U.S. Latino communities with Mexico and broader American society, emphasizing creative projects and performances acknowledged as scholarly in arts and literature. University of California researchers are eligible to apply for seed funding of up to $150,000 to support projects extending up to 24 months. This funding can be used for research activities, including travel to Mexico, hosting meetings at UC campuses or Casa de la Universidad de California in Mexico City, and forming lasting partnerships with academic and non-academic partners in Mexico. For more information and to apply, click here.

Call for Proposals for Small Grants for Conferences & Travel

Deadline to apply: July 19, 2024


Alianza MX is now accepting proposals for small grants to support activities that may include travel for a research conference or workshop presentation in Mexico or to host a conference, performance, or presentation at a UC campus. University of California researchers can apply for up to USD $5,000 in funding for activities from October 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025. For more information and to apply, click here.

2025 Seed Funding Opportunity for Mobilities to Mexico

Deadline to apply: September 27,  2024

The 2025 Seed Funding Opportunity for Mobilities to Mexico call is now accepting proposal submissions through September 2024. This funding opportunity aims to support all 10 UC campuses in increasing the mobility of UC students to Mexico by awarding an Alianza MX reserved seed fund of up to USD $50,000 per UC campus for the period 2025-2026. The 2025 Seed Funding Opportunity for Mobilities to Mexico will allow undergraduate and master level UC students to engage in academic mobilities such as faculty-led programs, study abroad at a Mexican institution, capstone projects, and filed research. For more information and to apply, click here.

Student Climate Ambassadors Join Energy & Sustainability Summit

  • On June 6, student members of the Alianza MX Climate Ambassadors initiative attended the Women in Energy & Sustainability Summit 2024, hosted by Mujeres en Energía Renovable México (Mexican Women in Renewable Energy, MERM). Three students served as panelists: Jorge Eduardo García from Universidad Panamericana on "Green Finance: Investing in the Transformation of the World"; Denise Barrales from UNAM on "Technological Disruption for Sustainability"; and Leonardo Daniel Casillas from UNAM on Youth Activism and Climate Change. Jail Ixel Cruz García, Alianza MX Strategic Research Initiatives Coordinator, also served as a panelist on "Advancing Towards Smart Mobility: Challenges and Opportunities," highlighting the importance of collaborative research in achieving sustainable mobility.

UC San Diego Alumni Convene at Casa de California


UC San Diego hosted a small Alumni Reception at Casa de California on May 30, which included a presentation by Dr. Octavio Aburto from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD.

UC San Diego Health Hosts Heart Transplant Conference

On June 19, UC San Diego Health hosted a Heart Transplant Conference in collaboration with the Mexico City Section of the Mexican Insurance & Securities Association (AMASFAC) at Casa de California in Mexico City. The event was headlined by keynote speaker Dr. Marcus Anthony Urey, Medical Director of the Heart Transplant Program at UC San Diego Health.

UC Education Abroad Program Begins Summer Program in Mexico

On June 28, the UC Education Abroad Program welcomed 26 students to their Summer Program, where students will participate in classes and immersive cultural activities.
 
UCEAP is currently running five programs with Mexico as the study abroad destination: 1) Community Health in Mexico, 2) Field Research in Mexico, 3) Contemporary Mexico, 4) Leadership in Social Justice and Public Policy, and 5) National Autonomous University of Mexico.
